Nevil Shute's Novels

Imagine a successful businessman who writes novels in the evening, first as a hobby and later as a new career. Perhaps he began his writing as therapy--a way to relax after a long day in the rapidly evolving aircraft industry. Or perhaps his novels allowed him to explain how business works, from the challenges faced during "the business" of fighting the world wars to the later challenges from government regulation and the growing enthusiasm for socialism in his native England.

Nevil Shute's novels are back in print in quality paperbacks. The titles shown here draw much from Shute's business experience (many of his other novels draw from wartime experiences). All are captivating reading and bring to life men and women of integrity, including competent businessmen (and sometimes shady ones) living their lives and getting things done.

Slide Rule is Shute's autobiography and includes his experiences as a designer and executive in the aircraft industry. Slide Rule also tells of Shute's involvement with the tragic R100 vs. R101 experiment carried out by the English government (government vs. private enterprise in the airship industry see separate article on this historical event here).

Most people who have heard of Nevil Shute know only his best-selling post-nuclear war novel, On the Beach. Some have seen the wonderful six-hour Australian mini-series A Town Like Alice (where the heroine becomes a successful businesswomen). Now with Shute's other novels are back in print, readers can have the pleasure of reading or re-reading these inspiring stories. And we can hope that more successful businessmen learn to write good novels.

The publisher of these editions, House of Stratus, is now out of business (April, 2004). Stock is still available at Amazon and Buy.com. So order soon. -- Greg Rehmke
